A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. Collective Leadership is a direct challenge to the individualized model of leadership we have been conditioned to expect and perform.

  • What vulnerabilities might prevent traditional leadership from embracing collective leadership?

How do we become a "collective leadership" leader vs a traditional one?

Which of the five elements is out of your control? Which one is most difficult for you to do well?

How have you learned to earn the trust from others that you will do the right thing?

Another question: Is your organization ready for collective leadership? 

Or, do they have team members that do not want to be leaders? 

In some manner - we are all leaders whether we wish to be or not....

Is the whole concept of "Collective" Leadership like a Jumbo Shrimp? Just asking for a friend. 

Pete - your comment is probably a lot closer to the truth than I might hope. Perhaps we need to connect with those who will be participating in Segment 11.

Collective Leadership:

"...impossible without a shared vision of what people hope to accomplish....all group members must accept some leadership role...no one person...."

Does collective leadership work in organizations that have collective bargaining agreements or strict hierarchies as in first responders, military or orchestras?

Great question Don - I think "Leadership" is primarily about:

  1. knowing what decisions to make
  2. knowing how to make decisions
  3. making the decision
  4. assuring implementation of the decision
  5. going back to step 1 when the implementation does not achieve what was intended

To answer your question from the perspective of the Authors and with bias towards what I think leadership is primarily about - I wonder for the examples you have cited:

Do they have:

  • A shared vision
  • A willingness to allow everyone to accept "leadership"
  • Accountability to be shared by everyone?

How might collective leadership be improved by striving to also be intelligent? Please consider what Brainy Dose offered to the Community Segment.
