What Are You Measuring?

Posted by Bill Crose on September 13, 2019 at 11:33am 1 Comment

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

Paul - I'd be happy to be a Panelist on this one. Thanks

Hey Paul and All!

I am tickled to moderate this topic of Create Community! I am sooo very curious about how we really create authentic community?  Webster has a ton of definitions so varied as to what constitutes community: region, ethnicity, religion, society, interest, fellowship and so much more. Are you involved in several communities like I am?

Curious as to what you think makes community stick? The ones that you feel really connected to vs those that you do not. What makes them work for you!

I think a community sticks when it functions in a "Mature" manner. To me it is distinguished from:

  • Infant-like communities centered on self-interest
  • Adolescent-like communities pretending not to be centered on self-interest
  • Mature communities authentically focused on the well-being of the community

Is an "authentic community" built through a shared affinity or a set of values? Is it built through a shared purpose or initiative?  How does one find his or her tribe?

I have a model I'll share during this breakout that drives toward the shared purpose community - hope you can join us for the conversation.

I am looking forward to learning the model.

Walt, I'm unable to attend the session, but I'm curious to know the model you use toward the shared purpose in a community? I find communication is key, but so is active listening.

Thank you for anything you are willing to share.

Brainy Dose had a lot to make us think about. Which of the 12 traits do you need to work on?

Which do you think I need to work on?

From the Authors of "Learning as a Way of Leading:

Community:

"....communication....identify with the whole....the common good of all..."

How do we assure that the communities we belong to are making intelligent decisions?

Paul,

So pleased to serve as a panelist for this conversation.   I would like to explore the importance of different communities coexisting and working together to solve problems.  The world we live in today "feels" so divisive.  It seems as though communities have aligned in an "all or nothing" camp where crossing community lines is prohibited and along with it a loss of strength in the "collective's" ability to solve problems.   How do we focus less on building empires and focus more on building bridges?
