Roles and Definitions:

Plus-BYOL-Plus Definition: BYOL – The Bring Your Own Learning panel format was used for the first time by Georgia LEARNS in 2015.

  • As Panelist – you describe with authenticity where you are willing to learn
  • As Curiosity Catalyst – you engage with others by asking and answering questions
  • As Humorist – you encourage others to learn by using humor to reduce the fear of learning
  • As “Remarkable Speaker/Listener” – you allow yourself to admit you learned from someone else.
  • As Engaged Participant – you may learn, or share your expertise, or be quiet.

  • Panelists have up to two minutes (30 seconds would be fine) to inspire curiosity and reference the format they will use (LearnAbout, TeachAbout, ReachoutAbout, CuriousAbout, AnotherAbout) in their breakout room (30-35 minutes.) The default format is “LearnAbout” in which the panelist will express what they wish to learn and then manage the conversation to assure that they do.
  • Remarkable” Speaker/Listener (thank you Michelle Prince) conclude a BYOL with the “-Plus” - a 5-to-10-minute closing presentation that describes what they learned from the panelists and breakouts.
  • Humorists began a BYOL segment with another “Plus-” – a 10-15-minute use of Relevant Humor to stimulate the conversations that will follow.
  • Curiosity Catalysts (previously identified as moderator)
    • Performs all the roles of a typical moderator - before the event through the online discussion. This includes asking questions of panelists and participants.
      • The participants may or may not be connected to the panel.
      • The participants may or may not be part of the conference.
    • Moves between breakout rooms during the segment as an engaged participant and to assist the panelists if needed.
    • Monitors the online discussions and encourages engaged participants to submit their ideas into it.
  • Engaged Participants play an most important role in the success of this conference. Specifically, your:
    • Willingness to read and comment in the online discussions - before, during and after the conference provides perpetual value to everyone - especially you.
    • Selection of which segments to attend helps us determine the relevance of the agenda.
    • Willingness to leave a breakout room if the conversation is not providing the expected value is important feedback to the panelist - and 100% aligned with the expectations of Georgia LEARNS!!!
    • Curiosity – respectfully ask questions - especially if you do not agree or understand the perspective of the Panelist – this will create curiosity capacity for yourself and other Engaged Participants, Humorists, Panelists, Curiosity Catalysts - and Remarkable Speakers!
  • Project Leaders emerge before during and after the conference and:
    • Stimulate interest in their project prior to the conference via the online discussions
    • Apply what they learned during the conference to their project
    • Inviting (or accepting requests from) conference participants to be part of their project.
    • Using the online discussion to provide relevant updates – well into the future.
    • Reducing Recidivism - Neicey Johnson
    • Literacy Leap - Kellie Huff
    • Leading Behind the Wheel
    • A Different Approach
    • Where Have All the Leaders Gone
    • AI Truth and Consequences for Education

Comment by Paul Terlemezian 3 hours ago

I think that it is part of human nature to compete - perhaps against ourselves...

I think that by competing we may discover why creation exists - and why we were created...

I think that by discovering why we were created -  we may collaborate so that everyone may compete...

I wonder and perhaps fear what might happen if we were not allowed to compete....
