What Are You Measuring?

Posted by Bill Crose on September 13, 2019 at 11:33am 1 Comment

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

Here is a definition of Minimal Viable Product - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_viable_product.

This is not new but perhaps it is new to our thinking from a learning perspective.

It is much more than a pilot - a Minimal Viable Product might never change - it might be a useful product forever.

In Georgia LEARNS 2016 we amplified the concept of Improv that Lisa Fey introduced to us in 2015. We referred to it as a "yes and..." mindset.

This mindset shift helped us adopt the Minimal Viable Product as a component of the Accountable Learning Organization model.

Each panelist will be asked to respond to how Minimal Viable Product relates to their application of the Accountable Learning Model to a current problem (one of the 10 defined on 2016 or a different one of their choice.)

I use the following analogy to help me apply Minimal Viable Product thinking:

Stage of Product:

  1. Crawl
  2. Walk
  3. Run
  4. Drive
  5. Fly

Todd Thurston suggested that we include a 6th level - "orbit." We have and this has now become part of the ALO(sm) Framework.
