What Are You Measuring?

Posted by Bill Crose on September 13, 2019 at 11:33am 1 Comment

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

How did Phyllis Diller choose to improve her humor? Would her humor "work" today? Why did it "work" then? How might she have improved it to be effective today?

George Carlin - was he serious? self-serving? just kidding? Is there any painful truth to the point he was stating?

How do we differentiate an idea that has outlived its time with one that can be improved?  What about resurgent ideas.  Those ideas that were put out to pasture and considered dead, yet somehow they regain their demand again and resurface as a must-have for a new generation?  What is the lesson learned by this phenomenon?  Should we anticipate resurgence?  What did COVID-19 teach us about the "idea" of remote work?  What improvements did we see regarding our remote environment over the past year or so?  Have we responded fast enough?  How can we be faster with improvement?  Who should decide what is an approved improvement?  I dare anyone to say "approved improvement" three times fast outloud without stumbling over those words a few times?  Something to ponder.  Can't wait to hear the "rest of the story"!

Was the resurgence planned? Was it out of our control?

Will slapstick comedy return? Will we be smashing cell phones instead of watermelons? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallagher_(comedian)

That's a great question Paul.  So in a true Socratic questioning mindset, should we plan for an idea resurgence?  Should we anticipate technological advances that will keep demand high with "planned" improvements...a.k.a the iPhone...I think we are up to 13 now, but the 14 is rumored to be released in the fall of 2022 and I'll bet money that the iPhone 15 will roll out in the fall of 2023.

I am hoarding 1999 calendars - if that year ever returns I am going to be quite wealthy because I don't think I will have any competition. Sure wish I had kept all my 1949 baseball cards....

Speaking of humor...a fun time with the USO Tour in Korea.  Jeff Morris and Colin Quinn!

Why was it so important to have humor in a combat zone?  What idea were we trying to protect?

Is this Jeff https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Morris_(actor) and is this Colin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Quinn?

I can imagine that humor was used to counter-balance the stress?

Were we trying to protect our humanity (evidenced by laughter) from being overtaken by the ultimate absence of humanity (fear of losing our life?)
