What Are You Measuring?

Posted by Bill Crose on September 13, 2019 at 11:33am 1 Comment

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

If we were in the "Bumper Sticker" business we might have created the following

Please answer any or all of these "Blue Ocean" Questions by replying below:

  1. What do you value the most  from Georgia LEARNS?
  2. What do you suggest we eliminate?
  3. What do you suggest we diminish?
  4. What do you suggest we increase?
  5. What do you suggest we do that has never been done before?

2011 We met Melissa Wade and the Glenn Pelham Foundation (thank you John Hurlbut) - who introduced us to DATC (Debate Across the Curriculum) - We have collaborated on D.A.T.E. (Debate Across the Enterprise)

2012 We met Jenny Trautman (thank you Ofra Tessler) and she donated her efforts to facilitate our planning sessions for event. She took us to a level we could not have reached on our own. She then did her "parlor trick" - graphical facilitation during the event and "stole the show!" - She earned it!

2013 We met in small groups throughout the year and Jenny Trautman facilitated several of the meetings. We had better conversations because the groups were smaller and focused.

2014 - Imani's post was unsolicited and was validation of the value we were trying to create.

2015 - Noor Shabib stole the show - she also deserved it. We hope she is doing well!

2016 The University of Phoenix (thank you Dr. Oggs) was an outstanding host and Todd Thurston captured the event on video. Axel Antonio https://www.linkedin.com/in/axel-antonio-314180ba/ may have stolen the show. The crowd designed solutions to impossible problems!

2017 The plan is for the ALO to be the key take-away but if history has taught us anything - then we know there will be a surprise!

2018 What do you suggest we try? (Why?)

  1. What do you value the most  from Georgia LEARNS?
The amazing amount of information shared between attendees.  It really opens the mind and allows for great learning and to see how others think and it provides new ideas on how to approach issues I may have with clients or projects or how to build a better world for myself and others.
  2. What do you suggest we eliminate?
I could only attend one day which was Thursday and I don't think I would have eliminated any of that day.
  3. What do you suggest we diminish?
I suggest an OTP location or an attempt to make the location as traffic friendly as possible to all
  4. What do you suggest we increase?
More printed information about attendees (opt in of course) on the attendee list and maybe a place on the list to make notes of what you learned from the person and what made them stand out to you
  5. What do you suggest we do that has never been done before?
What about having an optional service project the day prior to the start of Georgia Learns?

Thank you Todd.

  1. I value this too - and the conversations before and after as I connect with others that may or may not be able to attend.
  2. Something will likely change - not sure what that will be.
  3. Good point
  4. Another good point
  5. Sounds very interesting and this is well-aligned with our vision/mission - thank you.

I like the idea of an optional service project--- servant leadership/ Service before self- I can appreciate this.

Thanks for bringing up that idea, Todd!

Matt

A theme for 2018 that builds on the ALO theme of 2017 is "Performance Assurance." This emerged from a conversation with Damian Hanft over breakfast on November 29th.

What does "Performance Assurance" convey to you?
