A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

Taking an idea to the next level takes courage. You must become fearless in your pursuit of that idea and how it will manifest in the future. How do you get yourself and your people to embrace that uncertainty and that fear of failure that is inherent in all of us? How do we embrace looking silly and making mistakes? How do we create that in ourselves and how do we infuse it into our organization's culture? Would love some input and ideas. I work with engineers and contractors and every single thing they have been taught is to never make mistakes. It cost money and it can cost lives. How do we balance that?
This topic (courage) came up last week in a program TAG is offering to high potential leaders - nominated by their company executives. It is important to talk about.
I am reminded of my favorite definition of courage: "Doing the right thing in spite of acknowledging the fear that exists in you." I think the key is to be authentic. The key to being authentic is knowing who you are - and having the "strength of ego" sustained by belief in purpose. I (choose to) believe that "ego" and purpose are choices that reinforce each other. So what comes first - purpose or "ego." I (choose to) believe that they develop simultaneously.
Did the Flip Wilson create interest in the idea that was presented at the end by the Surprise Guest? Why or why not?
I think the video was probably OK by today's standards but I deleted it for consistency purposes and replaced it with Wikipedia articles.
What are your favorite Flip Wilson or Redd Foxx memories or clips?
Not sure what you mean by surprise guest?
Redd Foxx
Yes. He was a great comedian. He had some very blue material that would never be accepted today.
Yes he did. Was it farce? Were we laughing at the absurdity? Is laughing at what we think is wrong one way to defeat it? If we are not able to laugh at it - does it control us? I am wondering out loud about why absurdities persist?
What idea did the Mom of Joan Rivers express? What was the impact? What idea is Joan expressing? Does her idea need to be "refreshed?"
I removed this clip. What is your favorite Joan Rivers memory or clip?
Here is a quote from the Wikipedia article -
"In 1968, The New York Times television critic Jack Gould called Rivers "quite possibly the most intuitively funny woman alive".[7][8] In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine ranked her sixth on its list of the 50 best stand-up comics of all time,[9] and in October the same year, she was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame."
When you click on Joan Rivers, you get the Flip Wilson video. So I can't answer those questions.
I think I fixed it now.
What a dated idea of women having to be married! By making fun of it, Joan is making a great point with humor. I wonder if there are some ethnic references that wouldn't be allowed today? The nice Jewish girl marrying a doctor. Might not fly with today's audiences. I think there are some great humorous approaches to dating now with online dating and all kinds of approaches like polyamory and fluid gender assignment. It certainly adds several new dimensions. It could be very funny and also be very dangerous.
There are also some subtle references to who is supposed to do the "asking out" and therefore who is supposed to pay and an even more subtle reference to the "quality" of the location where the date occurs.
I think that there is more flexibility today with these subtleties. Do they still exist?
