What Are You Measuring?

Posted by Bill Crose on September 13, 2019 at 11:33am 1 Comment

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

Which goal do you prefer for your business - Revenue, volume, profit or impact?

Which goal do your clients prefer?

What would motivate a business to have such great impact that its services were no longer needed?

To your first two questions, I'll share a bit of my own company's journey, but first start with a maxim: Mission without sustainability does not last.

At GoLLM, my AI insights product company, we started in 2023 with an AI for Good foundation doing unpaid pilots automating large scale public consultation analyses and report generation work for local government authorities and other public entities. We were inspired to help the councils be more informed and inclusive of a broader array of community voices and to empower the councils to act faster with more advanced insights than they could typically produce (and save time and money).

While they loved what we were doing for them, they advised us to first sell our services to smaller players who had less onerous procurement processes. So we did. We began providing our product to SME consultancies to help them help their end clients (both public and private ones) with insights jobs like customer satisfaction and employee engagement. So we've been doing this while also maintaining the relationships with the councils.

Daniel, thank you. As you may recall from our BUDS days - I wonder why too many entities focus more on coping than curing....

Seven words to consider.

  1. Family
  2. Community
  3. Fairness
  4. Dignity
  5. Safety
  6. Respect
  7. Service

Excellent. The article is now behind a paywall, but for folks benefit:

The conclusion is that these seven words are not rhetorically magical, just honest. Author Matt Watkins argues that nonprofits need to speak to the broader public, not only to funders or other professionals in the sector. His final test for language is not whether it sounds clever, but whether people feel included by it and believe it.

The article’s practical takeaway is this: replace abstract, sector-insider wording with morally legible, everyday language that signals human stakes.

Agreed!
