A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…
ContinueEarlier this year, Glenn responded to the Conscious Capitalism/Georgia LEARNS Pluralism event by sending an email via LinkedIn. His message included:
"...the magic lies in an agreed upon process for making the conversation a "fair fight." In my experience, people accept the outcomes of fights they see as fair. One thing that I'm curious about debate is that the format still seems to point to a zero-sum outcome. One side or the other wins and the other loses. I think it would be interesting to have a debate format where the intended outcome is for the two sides to first present their positions and then to collaboratively generate an integrated position that incorporates their respective individual positions. I'm not sure how that would be scored, but I do believe that's ultimately what we hope for from collaboration, an approach that harnesses the best of multiple separate perspectives.
Paul Terlemezian responded:
"The 'debate' format we are experimenting with has phases. The first phase is to move from a win/lose mindset to a learning/relationship mindset. Once we have succeeded with that (it may take a while,) we will move to phase 2 - Design Solutions, Phase 3 - Implement Solutions, Phase 4 - Adapt Solutions. With each phase the measurable outcomes will include what we learned and how relationships were strengthened. In this process we need to discover how to deal with the pressures of time and money! Stay tuned - and please consider helping us!
Glenn responded:
"Paul - this is striking on a couple of levels for me. First that there are other folks out there working on the idea of what I would call integrative debating, and second that your phases map very well onto the overall conflict model I teach."
