What Are You Measuring?

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

The Georgia LEARNS Now Point-of-VIew process usually includes the following:

  1. A series of informal conversations that reveal something worth having a point-of-view about.
  2. A survey intended to learn from others regarding the "something"
  3. A GLN event -usually a Forum
  4. A draft POV document
  5. A review period for that draft
  6. Ongoing work that emerges from conversations stimulated by the draft

Regarding "The Future of Learning"

  1. Formal and informal conversations on this topic led to the formal creation of GLN in 2014.
  2. A survey was conducted in August of 2024
  3. A forum was conducted on August 13, 2024
  4. A draft POV is attached
  5. A formal review of the draft was conducted on August 20, 2024.
  6. A Future of Learning Team was proposed as a result of this process.

I'm very optimistic about the future, but am not sure training and learning will be anything like it is now. I've already stopped using those words. My perspective:

  1. Every business worldwide has just 1 goal and it is to rapidly grow sustainable profit
  2. Every business worldwide has just 3 objectives, they are to a) Enable performance via best method, b) Assure performance, and c) Continuously improve performance
  3. Training is an expensive but weak performance enabler that can't assure or continuously improve performance
  4. Performance includes the work system (work policies, equipment, SOPs, etc.) and the worker system (KSA)
  5. All performance improvement initiatives begin with analysis
  6. I see needs analysis encompassing both the work and work system and resolving org-wide issues first and working down to individual worker KSA -training will be recommended only when content can be memorized and practiced and only as a last resort after advanced intelligence augmentation, intelligence augmentation, video, audio, etc.
  7. With live data feeds from artificial intelligence augmentation devices, motion sensors, the compensation system, equipment monitors, etc., AI will perform needs analysis 24/7/365
  8. AI will deliver a near real-time, prioritized report of business-wide needs including the estimated cost of the issue, estimated cost to fix the issue, the estimated time it will take deliver the fix, the break-even date of the projected solution, the ROI on the projected solution, etc.
  9. Ethics, climate protection, and other priorities are addressed in the AI-driven needs analysis system

Finishing as I started, I'm very optimistic. I think humanity, we, have the best opportunity ever to create a better world than when we leave than when we arrived. We can make business consciencious, ethical, and wildly profitable. I think the promise of AI is to enable computers to make better, cheaper, faster decisions without the human greed, bias, or self-service that we've always suffered. I think AI will replace high and mid dollar managers, directors, and execs, decisions will be made without greed, bias, or self-service, and the windfall savings acquired by eliminating those jobs can be divided equitably by algorithm and growing the business. Governments will be able to monitor AI algorithms to assure safety, ADA, EEO, AA, and other legal an ethical requirements instead of having people constantly filling out compliance reports. BTW, I don't see fewer jobs in the future, I see far more thanks to the continued explosion of US innovation.

Thank you Bill. I am also optimistic and working on being more empathetic. I feel like we know what to do and in general lack the empathy that is necessary to understand how to help others do what we know is needed. I hope that the team we create will be strong on optimism, empathy, and execution. I am optimistic that we will either succeed or learn why we did not. The "not" may be the gift we offer to our descendants...
