What Are You Measuring?

Posted by Bill Crose on September 13, 2019 at 11:33am 1 Comment

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

One potential obstacle to an idea might be the idea that is already being implemented - the "Old Idea." With insight from The Daily Drucker (November 10)- might we learn "How to Abandon."

Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman and the crew -were irreverent - and yet quite popular. While some may consider this clip to be offensive -it was the mildest one of about ten that I watched from that era. Eventually humor like this may be restricted to Las Vegas or private clubs as it may no longer be suitable for prime-time non-cable television.

I removed this clip - what is your favorite Carol Burnett memory or clip?

Dean Martin was notable for his comedy with Jerry Lewis. This clip with Foster Brooks is unusual as Dean was often the one displaying an abuse of alcohol. Did this exaggeration of alcohol abuse for the purpose of comedy go too far?

Here is a quote from the Wikipedia article on Dean Martin:

Martin has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: one at 6519 Hollywood Boulevard for movies; the second at 1617 Vine for recordings; and a third at 6651 Hollywood Boulevard for television. In February 2009, Martin was honored with a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Looking forward to a rich discussion!

Same!  When has "letting go of the old" been either an obstacle or an accelerant for something in your work/life?

Carol Burnett, Dean Martin, Flip Wilson and more - examples of "old" comedy...or are they classics that keep on giving (the gift of laughter)? How have time and changes in society diminished their humor?  Has the steady stream of new comedians diminished the old timers'' humor? When should we drop away or abandon what's old - an idea, a product, a business model...a stand-up routine? How do we respect what came before while freeing ourselves (and our organizations) for whatever is coming next?  I'm excited to participate in this discussion about a matter which we face with every passing moment of our days - as what is "next" or "now" passes instantly into "old." Thoughts?

I have been "thinking" about humor a lot - lately. One "truism" about a joke is that it usually works best the first time you hear it. It just does not seem as funny the next time - because the "surprise" is gone. And yet - the point of the humor (i.e. the source of the pain that motivated the joke) might persist. So the impact of the humor might be revealing the underlying matter that needs to be resolved - and then we can laugh about the fact that we no longer have "anything" to laugh about!

Humor can break down barriers because it is a form of authenticity like music and art. Of course humor needs cross-cultural competency to be effective, but laughing together with someone can be highly inspiring! For me, I use music to break down political and ideological barriers. I'm in a professional rock band and it's amazing how new ideas have been generated through being exposed to so many different kinds of people.
