A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

Peter Perceval is scholarly and yet not particularly funny to me. He does make an interesting model for humor and its connection to innovation:
What might hinder our ability to consider "beyond the self-evident?"
As humans we are wired to protect ourselves hence why we stay with the familiar. Going beyond the self-evident might bring discomfort which we all seek to avoid. It is crucial to unlock our divergent thinking in a deliberate and safe manner so that we can ignore discomfort while we seek the unobvious.
Excellent point Anthony. What approaches have you found to be successful to unlock divergent thinking in others in a deliberate and safe manner? How might we prepare ourselves to feel safe when divergent thinking is desired?
Most comedy routines are scripted. Improv might be the exception.
How would your perception of Improv change if you found out it was scripted?
What was the impact to professional wresting when they admitted it was scripted? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_wrestling
Is teaching scripted? Is learning scripted?
Protecting and "idea". First, we have to have an understanding of what protection is. Perhaps it's soley based on intellectual property from a legal perspective. After all, and idea isn't something we can touch, see, and feel, right? Or is it? How do we know an idea is worth protecting? How do we know an idea is valuable? Is it valuable from a profit perspective? Or is it valuable to the community where we work and live? Are we concerned that sharing our idea may result in its piracy if we don't have it legally protected? Do we limit the evolution of an idea if we don't share it? If we do share it, who do we share it with? What would be considered safe? Do get someone to sign a nondisclosure statement prior to revealing the idea or do we take a risk? How do we determine the risk associated with our idea? Hmmmm...something to think about isn't it?
Interesting questions...are we also willing to spend the time, energy, money, and brand impact related to getting our idea "back" from the entity that took it from us?
I wonder what happens when we put an AND instead of an OR? Protect and share? How does one help the other? Through sharing your idea, you gain understanding of how the idea needs to be protected. Through protecting the idea, you gain time and space to decide HOW you want to share the idea in a more intentional way. I'm curious about how each is connected to the other.
The tension between protect and share may be a matter of timing. The humorist "protects" the punch-line until the right time to share it. If shared too soon - the joke is "ruined." If shared too late - the joke may have less of an impact than desired. If never shared....is it still funny?
Interested point. Thank you for the "AND" consideration.
Some individuals protect ideas for the purpose of sole recognition and accolades. Others might protect ideas to avoid the risk of losing control of the ideas. On the other hand, as stated by Drs. Dennis & Michelle Reina in "Trust & Betrayal in the Workplace", sharing information inspires collaborative relationships. Collaboration entails working together toward goals that no single person can solve individually. It is the active participation amongst partners who comprehend one another’s area of expertise and support the roles of each toward optimum outcomes. A partnership involving coordinated approaches to shared decision making on issues.
