What Are You Measuring?

Posted by Bill Crose on September 13, 2019 at 11:33am 2 Comments

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

  • What is the purpose of earning?

Earning funding may also be viewed as "selling" and with that perspective I offer a "selling" framework for your review.

The five and half reasons someone will not respond the way you wish to request for funds.

  1. Lack of trust (in you or in their ability to realize value)
  2. Lack of interest in what you are offering
  3. Interested but not in how you are proposing to apply the funds
  4. The request is important but not urgent
  5. Your "ask" was not doable now
  6. (half reason) - money does not exist

What questions do you have?

What would you add to this list?

Here are some questions on my mind:

  1. What is the difference between "earning" funding and "asking" for funding?
  2. What expectations do you prefer that the funding source has of you?
  3. What can you do to assure that a funding source would willingly provide funds to you again?
  4. What can you do to overcome your failure to meet the expectations of the funding source?
  5. What questions do you have?

I read an article today that stated the "The Outcome Matters."

I thought:

To whom? When? For how long? At what non-financial cost?

What else?
