What Are You Measuring?

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

So how does one get away from all the Zoom Fatigue with new innovative ways to use video in meetings or webcasts?  How does humor impact the consumption of learning for adults?  What ae some good platforms to enhance that overall experience?

Looking forward to your feedback.   Larry

Thanks Larry - what comes first - the platform or the purpose?

Zoom Fatigue is likely real - and yet I wonder is Fatigue present (independent of Zoom?)

And yes I believe humor impacts consumption and the experience in a positive manner.

How can we be assured that application of what was taught/learned is impacted in a positive manner?

Pros And Cons Of Video In Training And Education

  • Video is not cheap. Text uses the least bandwidth, audio significantly more and video the most. High quality, telepresence systems are still very expensive.
  • The most powerful use of video for learning is using video recordings for feedback to learners practicing psychomotor skills. Improving a golf swing is an example. ...
  • Another effective use of video is for demonstration of skills and procedures that clearly have a visual component. An example is welding. ...
  • Much of video is talking head – a person speaking. In live (synchronous) environments this may add facial expression and body language to the mix to enhance engagement and improve ...
  • Unlike text-based communication, controlling the pace is difficult.

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend this.  My loss.

Hi Paul,

I like your Pros and Cons … Since you mention about learners seeing examples of “expert” skill / performance, I wonder if your second bullet is better if you replace learning with performance.  I think the “field” needs to be constantly reminded about the differences between development, learning / knowledge, and performance.

Some people seem to appreciate this quote, perhaps a Zen quote:  To know and not to do, is not yet to know.

I wonder what it would be like if participants upload/ use their own videos  If everyone has Share privileges, participant videos can be used in breakout rooms.

Best To Everyone ...

Henry

Thanks Henry - we'll miss the opportunity to learn with you. The Zen quote is is something to keep in mind - thank you! I like the idea of participants contributing to the dialog with their own  videos!
