What Are You Measuring?

A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. We spend time and money on gathering information and benchmarking and/or extrapolating. This seems smart - especially when (if) the information is relevant and accurate.

How do we avoid the trap of making decisions based on the information we have or that we know how to collect and analyze? If it is difficult for us then it may be difficult for our others too - and perhaps that is why no one is happy about existing solutions.

How do we allocate our budgets for this "challenge to our thinking." Would the money be spent before, during or after we build the solution - in what proportions?

How do we obtain better information faster to produce better outcomes? Do we need to have the information before we make a decision? Is it only useful after our decision? Could information be something we collect as we implement our solutions?
