"Many start strong but few finish well" - especially if the finish line is never quite in sight - or keeps moving.

Too often, we define success by the outcomes that others decide are important" - By allowing the person we are trying to help define success - we are assured that 100% of their time will be used to either advance or hinder or adapt the success they defined - until they run out of time - and then perhaps what they accomplished may help others - which might have been the desired outcome. Our role becomes one to adapt rather than one to judge.

"I hadn't failed at all - I just wasn't finished yet" - Many years ago I read that often we judge others by their outcomes and ourselves by our intentions. Alignment is an important part of this work - integrity is an essential component of alignment - how do we determine our integrity?

"Transformation requires an eternal outlook" - "How do I do good better today than I did yesterday?" - "Then you only have to be willing to walk together, as long as it takes."
Chapter 10 - Changing Names, Changing Livestag:georgialearnsnow.ning.com,2019-07-28:6555741:Topic:164282019-07-28T14:55:38.050ZPaul Terlemezianhttps://georgialearnsnow.ning.com/profile/34skzl1mtlumh

"One thing you can't hide / Is when you're crippled inside." - John Lennon, "Crippled Inside"

"It's the awesomely radical trust that the people we help are so often able to discover." - perhaps this is the real point of this book. It is natural to think that this book is about how we have to trust others (and that may still be true) - yet - can you imagine being able to help someone else if they do not trust you - or themselves?

"a new birth certificate" - what if family - where most of us discover (and likely continue to experience) trust is the source of the experience that prevents trust from having any chance to develop - with anyone?

"Surely meeting urgent needs imperfectly was better than not meeting them at all." - and then perhaps be ready to "embark on a journey that no one on our team had planned to travel."

"Rather than try to understand why good people were more focused on guarding their crises fiefdom than...." I will remember this quote and will likely use the word "perspective" in place of "crises fiefdom" and yet I also believe that Bruce is correct - too often.

"Not a chance she's going to make it" - Perhaps the assumptions of our predictions can trap us into the predicted outcome (I recall the "Ladder of Inference" and "self-fulfilling prophecy lessons I have been exposed to by others.) Rather than use our resources to measure and judge - we can use them to adapt?

"If you are real, I'd like to ask you for a favor" - sometimes just showing up can have an impact to someone else - which you may or may not ever know about.
Chapter 9 - Let It Shinetag:georgialearnsnow.ning.com,2019-07-28:6555741:Topic:160342019-07-28T03:10:52.349ZPaul Terlemezianhttps://georgialearnsnow.ning.com/profile/34skzl1mtlumh

"No, I didn't attend Jake's funeral." - My guess is that Jake would have been OK with that - he knew that Bruce had been with him when Jake needed him. Better to feel remorse for missing a funeral than for missing the opportunity to live with the person while they were alive.
Chapter 7 - No Lost Causestag:georgialearnsnow.ning.com,2019-07-27:6555741:Topic:164252019-07-27T22:19:19.894ZPaul Terlemezianhttps://georgialearnsnow.ning.com/profile/34skzl1mtlumh

"Any chance I could wash my feet?" A much friendlier interaction than the "Michael" experience. What gave the homeless person the courage (bravery) to ask? How ironic that the permanence of shoes and socks were appreciated - and yet the temporary aspect of a shower and shave was also desired. There is much to be learned from this story.

"Bull in the Ring" - it is fascinating to think about how an experience with one purpose creates an unanticipated outcome at a distant time and place.
Chapter 4 - Life v.
"Some people get stuck on stupid." - L. C.

"The Lotto shop on Bankhead Highway" - this story is humbling. Are we prepared to continue doing the "right thing" even if - especially if - the likelihood of the "right outcome" is zero? What's the point? What's the harm? What if the potential for harm is greater than the potential of the "right outcome?"

Nine-minute increments - after all - no one lives forever....
