A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. These four "roles" correlate well to the terms I learned from Roger Von Oech early in my career. I wonder of four is the "magic" number and that an important task for an author/teacher/learner is to convey the "four" in a way that can learned and applied - in an environment where we know that not everyone learns in the same way at the same time for the same reasons. The 34 themes are wonderful and yet add complexity, ambiguity, and for some - an unnecessary hurdle. Might a visual help?
Also the lists are just lists - is there a recommended system or sequence? How do different sequences affect the outcomes? When might different sequences be more effective? Do we think before we execute? Always? Perhaps the later chapters will offer more clarity.
After reading the four chapters...
