A lifetime ago, my training department colleagues and I were satisfied with training data. We cranked out the requested ILT programs plus the "flavor of the year" content, we kept a busy training schedule, and made sure the coffee was always the right temperature. When accused of not delivering effective training because the learners didn't perform as they were trained, we took refuge in our management support role and not ultimately responsible or accountable for LEARNING or productivity.…

Hello! It is a pleasure to learn something from you as I hope you learn something from me!
I want to drop a question here and allow it to resonate in the back of your mind.
Can you define a learning organization? If you can, what would you define a learning organization as?
Learning Organizations are an area of research that I have specialized in for the last three years in a doctoral program at The University of Memphis.
In the hour session, I aim to get your thoughts about the term "learning organization," as you have experienced the word in your career, or career path, education, or life experiences, and provide you with a detailed analysis of my research. I will be leaving you with an opportunity to become apart of the fabric of the study on the important term.
I believe that learning is voluntary and involuntary - similar to breathing. We breather whether we are conscious of doing so - or not. We learn whether we are conscious of doing so or not.
What might a breathing organization do?
Would it allow others to breathe as they choose?
Would it prevent pollutants? Who decides what might be a pollutant?
What responsibilities do we have as breathers - regarding what we inhale and exhale?
Matt,
These are excellent rhetorical considerations around learning organizations. I wish I were able to be there and hope you will share a couple of other thoughts I have for the community around a “Learning Organization” as exploration.
There are likely to be many individual definitions regarding what defines a learning organization. Is it worth exploring the nature of a learning organization as a culture? Within the culture of a learning organization are questions to explore.
Nathan - we are planning monthly events for Georgia LEARNS in 2020 - if your interests bring you this way next year we will try to build an event that includes you.
Paul - Count me in. If I know far enough in advance I can balance work and being there. Do you have an idea at this point when the calendar will come out for next year, Paul?
Hi Matt!
It was nice meeting you in person at GL.
We didn't get much time to talk there, but I went in with the experience of a learning organization as defined by Jeanne Meister (Corporate University) and am ready to help companies change from that orientation to more of a corporate performance assurance organization.
Good luck in the UK this week!
